Meant To Move
As some of you know, I am in the process of writing a book. And boy-oh-boy has it been a process!
This book has been in me to write for a few years now and I just couldn’t figure out how or where to begin. I can’t tell you how many false starts I had.
My first couple of attempts were demoralizing. I had thoughts such as “Who am I to think I know how to write a book!?” And “Who on earth wants to listen to what I have to say?!” Then of course, “and really who gives a s---?!” (p.s. those thoughts still creep in sometimes.)
Besides, the best book I ever read about writing was Stephen King’s book, On Writing, and he talks about writing and reading every day (I do love to read every day by the way.)
"But I’m running a business! I’m a crazy busy entrepreneur with a brand to build and run! How can I write every day! Besides all the content I’m already writing for blogs! Press! Instagram!" (fears, all fears…)
So I kept “trying” and feeling like a failure.
But it was still in me. Deep in me, to share personal stories with the world in order to offer meaning and value to life. To offer tools and guidance to others along their own journey, their own story. Validating and normalizing the human experience with all its trials and tribulations, challenges, thrills, and joys. To offer others a way to think about healing through (even the smallest amount of) movement.
The truth is, I want to do my part in creating a more joyful and compassionate world. This is my mission. And if anything I say can possibly illuminate the road there, then I’m fulfilling my life’s purpose. But I didn’t just want to write a book. I wanted to write it well.
So I decided to take action, admit that I didn’t know what I was doing, and hire a book coach. I found Alicia Dunams, who I now happily call a wonderful and important friend (and badass boss babe).
Alicia is passionate about leadership, women, storytelling, and supporting the vision of others while helping bring that vision to life. She has been instrumental in my writing process with her guidance, support, and mad skills. Besides her brilliance in book writing and marketing, Alicia creates a safe and loving space for exploration, creativity, and passion.
So I’m plugging away, with my coach guiding and cheering me on. Yes there are major uphills, pitfalls, fears, and doubts. But there is also creative flow, clear vision, delight, surprise, and - yes - enormous joy.
Now I'm going back to writing it. Story by story, memory by memory, lesson by lesson…
