Pilates for Seniors by The Core Expert

As we age, we lose flexibility in our muscles, and mobility in our joints. Our posture begins to suffer, our muscles begin to gradually decline in strength, and our energy levels tend to wane. A great prescription for this is to practice daily movement to rebuild strength and endurance, maintain mobility, boost serotonin, and stimulate blood-flow and circulation.

Why Pilates is Great For Seniors

Pilates is a phenomenal movement system for seniors, with many benefits. It is a low impact movement method that strengthens and lengthens the muscles, deepens the mind-body connection, improves flexibility and mobility, corrects posture, and aids in a multitude of other daily functions.

Because Pilates can be modified to suit any skill level, it is an ideal workout for the active aging community.

My online Pilates videos for seniors are a functional way to get you moving without adding stress or strain to your muscles and joints. If you are suffering from arthritis or osteoporosis, my videos can help by increasing joint flexibility, bone density, and muscle mass, which in turn helps support the skeletal system and increase joint lubrication.

How to Adapt a Pilates Workout to Your Level

I have created a series of chair Pilates and standing Pilates online videos specifically catered to seniors. They can easily be done at home with a standard household chair, sitting or standing, and by simply using your own body weight. Throughout these videos I demonstrate adding small weighted objects like soup cans or water bottles if you want the extra resistance challenge..

These workouts are adaptable, fun, and can be increased in frequency and difficulty at your own pace.

Pilates Exercises That Are Good for Seniors

I offer a number of videos that allow seniors to move at their own pace and get acclimated to the style of movement I teach. All of the movement sequences in my Pilates videos for seniors flow through easy transitions without any exercises that take you up and down from the floor, unlike a Classical Pilates Mat class would.

I combine different modalities including light cardio, static leg and arm exercises, squats using the back of the chair for support, and basic core engagement for a well-rounded body, mind, spirit experience.

In all of my online Pilates videos there is a focus on connecting breath to movement. This is an especially important component for seniors to practice. As we age our breathing can become labored and inconsistent. Maintaining this connectivity of breath stimulates brain function, improves sleep cycles, increases energy levels, boosts your immune system, improves digestion, and increases overall energy levels.

As I guide you through these exercises, hopefully you will feel a vast improvement in your strength, stamina, and your well-being in body, mind, and spirit.

I initially created these sequences for my beautiful parents and they loved them so much that they suggested I share them with you. They are a labor of love and truly come from my heart. I hope you enjoy the journey!
